The 10 Richest Women of All Time

Throughout history, men are typically thought of as titans of industry and the money makers. Basically, vast fortunes are often assumed to come from a man's work. In the olden days, the law prevented women from owning property—which didn't help the fairer gender's cause when it came to amassing wealth. The sad fact is that women with huge personal net worth are very much a modern phenomenon.
The following 10 women span eras and centuries. They are also not JUST heiresses, we've focused on women who either created their own wealth, or if they inherited it, they've taken an active role in managing and growing their fortune. Because of this, Wal-Mart heiresses Alice Walton and Christy Walton don't make the list, even though Alice Walton is the richest woman in America.
Comparing these women's wealth across different centuries is challenging, so this ranking is initially based on the comparison of an individual's net worth to total global economic output in their era. That's why you won't see Oprah Winfrey ($3.2 billion) or Theranos' Elizabeth Holmes ($4.5 billion) on this list. Those two women, while extraordinarily wealthy and self-made, don't have enough money relative to the current global GDP to make the list. Once the top 10 women were narrowed down, we ranked the modern ones according to current net worth, and the ones from ancient eras by perceived net worth adjusted for inflation.
  1. Yang Huiyan
Net Worth:$5.2 billion
Lived: 1981-present
Nation: China
Yang Huiyan is heir to her father's enormous Chinese real estate empire. However, she is also quite a businesswoman in her own right and she is a member of the governance board of Country Garden, a property development company. She was hit hard by the economic recession in 2007. She started off with a $16.2 billion fortune, but following the financial crisis, her net worth plummeted to $5.2 billion.
  1. Charlene de Carvalho-Heineken

When Freddy Heineken died in 2002, Charlene inherited his $4.8 billion fortune and a 50% controlling interest in the family beer business. De Carvalho-Heineken was instrumental in choosing the company's current CEO, Jean-Francois van Boxmeer. Under his reign, Heineken has experienced rapid growth with the acquisition of more than $30 billion worth of breweries.

  1. Susanne Klatten
Net Worth: $16.2 billion
Lived: 1962-present
Nation: Germany
Susanne Klatten is the richest woman in Germany. Susanne, her mother Johanna, and brother Stefan own nearly 50% of BMW.  But Susanne is not your ordinary heiress. She is an educated economist who also controls chemical manufacturer Altana and has worked since she got out of college. She worked for the advertising agency Young & Rubicam in Frankfurt for two years in the early 80s. She had a number of hands-on internships in her family's business empire. She gained further business experience in London with Dresdner Bank, the Munich branch of management consultants McKinsey, as well as the bank Reuschel & Co.  In many cases of her employment, whether in a family owned company or not, she worked under the assumed name Susanne Kant so as not to receive special treatment and be approached and treated on her own terms, not those dictated by her inherited wealth. We think that's pretty cool and down to earth.
  1. Anne Cox Chambers
Net Worth: $17 billion
Lived: 1919-present
Nation: United States
Anne Cox Chambers is the sole surviving daughter of James M. Cox, the founder of privately held media conglomerate Cox Enterprises, and his second wife Margaretta Parker Blair. Cox inherited her father's business interests and she is the majority owner of the media giant that generates around $16 billion in annual revenues. She worked in the family business in various capacities for decades. She held a seat on the board of the company that includes such subsidiaries as Cox Communications (broadband and cable), Cox Media Group (newspapers, TV and ration stations), Manheim (car auctions), and AutoTrader.com well into her 90s. In November 2015, the now-96-year-old businesswoman stepped down from the board, distributing her stake to her three heirs

  1. Isabella of Castile
Net Worth:

1.45 million ducats, annually
Lived: 1451-1504
Nation: Spain
Queen Isabella I of Castile was, in her era, one of the richest monarchs in the world. Then she got even richer by marring her cousin Ferdinand of Aragon, which enabled her to consolidate her control over all of Spain by reclaiming the Iberian Peninsula and expanding into the New World. At the time of her death in 1504, she had an annual income of roughly 1.45 million ducats–the gold coin that was Spain's currency. She possessed the most valuable jewels and tapestries in the world at the time. As for Isabella's net worth, 1000 ducats is pretty much equal to 110.7 ounces of gold. Gold is currently $1,230 per ounce. Queen Isabella I was making 1.45 million ducats a year…do the math.
  1. Cleopatra
Net Worth: $95.8 billion
Lived: 69-30 BC
Nation: Egypt
Of course Cleopatra, one of the most legendary female rulers, is on this list. Cleopatra is remembered as much for her wealth and great beauty as she is for her mad skills in manipulating people for her own political gain. As pharaoh of Egypt, Cleopatra controlled some of the nation's largest industries at the time. It should be noted that Cleo wasn't always solvent enough to afford her life of luxury. She was known to borrow heavily from foreign investors to finance the many wars she waged during her reign.
  1. Catherine the Great
Net Worth: $1.5 trillion (estimated)
Lived: 1729-1796
Nation: Russia
Catherine the Great's rule over Russia gave her control of roughly 5% of global GDP in her era. She was helped by the fact that Russia is historically one of the largest empires in terms of land. Catherine is Russia's longest reigning female. Catherine hoped for liberal reform when she took the throne but changed her mind after the uprising of 1773.
  1. Hatshepsut

  1. Empress Wu
Net Worth:
Not Known
Lived: 624-705 AD
Nation: China
The tale of Empress Wu is a juicy one. You don't get to be the richest woman of all time without a little intrigue and bloodshed. Empress Wu rose to power in the Tang Dynasty. In fact, she was the concubine of two emperors who happened to be father and son. When the son, Emperor Gaozong, became ruler, Wu was single minded and ruthless about eliminating her rivals for his affection. Reportedly, she killed her own week-old daughter and blamed the crime on one of Gaozong's main consorts, Empress Wang. Wang was then imprisoned and killed and Wu rose to power. During her 15-year reign, the empire of China expanded its lands deep into central Asia, making it one of the largest empires in the world.

Leonardo DiCaprio Turning Hs Private Island Into An Eco-Friendly Luxury Resort

Throughout his career, Leonardo DiCaprio has played some very rich men: eccentric tycoon Howard Hughes, fictional playboy Jay Gatsby, and "The Wolf of Wall Street," Jordan Belfort.
None of these characters are that far a stretch for Leo though, considering his romantic proclivity for dating supermodels. And the actor's real life exceeds all three men in at least one way: dude owns an island.
DiCaprio reportedly bought Blackadore Caye, a 104-acre island off the coast of Belize, almost a decade ago for $1.75 million with business partner Jeff Gram, who runs Cayo Espanto Island Resort on another private island nearby. It costs almost $2,000 a night for a couple to stay at Cayo Espanto.

Johnny Depp Pays $320,000 To Fly Dogs Home On A Private Jet

ANDREW COWIE/AFP/Getty ImagesWe usually think of the rich and famous as being able to bend the law of the land to suit their purposes, but that isn't always the case. One exception to the rule happened recently in Australia, where Johnny Depp is shooting his latest Pirates of the Caribbeanjoint. The Australian government caught wind of the fact that Depp's two dogs, named Boo and Pistol, were staying at the actor's rented house without having first been cleared as being free of disease. Not following the quarantine protocol is something Australia's Agricultural Minister Barnaby Joyce takes very seriously, and as a result, the dogs had to be shipped back to Los Angeles — via a private jet, naturally.

The Quarter Million Dollar Bentley Continental GT Speed

STAN HONDA/AFP/Getty Images
Bentley and luxury cars go hand in hand. Their fastest line of sports cars, the Continental GT Speed, has been around since 2008 and keeps getting better. The 2015 Bentley Continental GT Speed has been redesigned with a minimal facelift for its latest go round. This car will set you back just shy of a quarter million dollars, at about $240,000, so what makes it worth that much?
The latest Continental GT Speed is available as either a coupe or a convertible, both in all-wheel drive. It features a 6.0 liter twin-turbocharged W-12 engine capable of 626 horsepower. If you have a need for Speed this Bentley can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 4 seconds flat and has a top speed of 206 mph. It also has a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission featuring Quickshift and Block Shifting. The Continental GT Speed has a specially tuned chassis and its 24 gallon tank has an EPA fuel economy of 12 to 13 miles per gallon on city streets and about 20 mpg on the highway. If the price of this car wasn't high enough, it is also going to be a killer to fill 'er up at the gas station.

World's Most Expensive Ruby Sells For Staggering Amount At Auction

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but you can't go wrong with a huge ruby, either. An enormous 25.59 carat Burmese ruby set a world record earlier this week when it sold at auction in Geneva for double the amount for which it was expected to sell. According to Sotheby's, the ruby went through a competitive bidding period on Tuesday and sold to an anonymous Swiss bidder for $30.3 million. The large pigeon blood ruby is considered to be one of the rarest of all gemstones.
The "Sunrise Ruby" from Myanmar was part of a collection of Cartier jewels up for auction. It was expected to sell for between $12 million and $18 million. The sale set a record for a ruby and also for a Cartier jewel at auction. The sale price of $30.0 million was just over three times the previous record for a ruby, which was a stone called the Graff Ruby, sold in November 2014. The Sunrise Ruby is now the most expensive precious gem in the world that is not a diamond.

Billionaire Larry Ellison Closes 97% Of Hawaiian Island Lanai For Extreme Renovations

It's a sad stereotype, but billionaires are just not known for their environmentalism. Luckily for the self-esteem of billionaires everywhere (not to mention the environment),Larry Ellison is breaking free of that harmful perception, with a project that's making headlines for improvements he's making to the Hawaiian island of Lanai. There are two other interesting things at play here, which probably explains why a billionaire making environmentally-oriented improvements to a resort he owns is getting so much play in the media. For one, Ellison owns 98% of the entire island, the result of a $300 million purchase he made back in 2012. And it's all but 1% of those holdings that are being closed off to visitors in order for the improvements to be made.
Granted, Lanai is the smallest piece of the Hawaiian Islands that's open to public visitors in the first place, but it's still an impressive feat when an individual manages to close down a whopping 97% of any island, regardless of how small it is. And in doing so, Larry Ellison hopes to make Lanai "the first economically viable, 100% green community." At least, that's what he says he hopes to do, and we just have to trust that he isn't involved in some kind of James Bond villain plot to take over the world from his tiny tropical island stronghold.

Billionaire Of The Day: Haim Saban – How To Make A "Power Rangers" Sized Fortune…

Haim Saban is in the news right now because of millions donated to the Clinton Foundation in his name and his support of the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign, but if that name looks familiar to you it's probably because of something much more important than presidential politics: Children's television from the 80s and 90s. That's right, billionaire businessman Haim Saban is the "Saban" in Saban Entertainment, the production company behind, most notably, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, but other children's action-adventure shows re-purposed from old Japanese TV shows as well, such as Masked RiderVR Troopers and Big Bad Beetleborgs.
Before launching Saban Entertainment, Haim Saban wasn't exactly a likely choice to eventually become a billionaire, growing up in a one room Tel Aviv apartment with his seamstress mother and office supply salesman father, and never getting around to going to college. But he managed to build up one of the most commercially successful entertainment brands of the 20th century, and in addition, become heavily involved in the Fox Family Channel along with the News Corportation. The sale of that channel to The Walt Disney Company back in 2001 was another big windfall for Saban, who netted an estimated $1.6 billion in the process – not a small sum under any circumstances, but especially impressive when you consider that it represents almost half of his current estimated net worth of $3.4 billion.

The Final Mayweather-Pacquiao Revenue Numbers Are In!! Here's How Much Money Everyone Will Take Home.

No more guessing, no more estimating, no more speculating, no more speculessating. The final numbers have been tallied and we now know exactly how much Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao will earn off their record-smashing fight of the century.
If you've been following this story on Celebrity Net Worth recently, I have good and bad news. The bad news is Floyd and Manny won't earn quite as much as we predicted last week ($280 million and $190 million, respectively). The good news is they are still both going to take home a SHIT TON of money.
Last week, when we predicted that Floyd could earn as much as $280 million, we were basing that on the assumption that the final Pay-Per-View buy count would top 5.6 million. The actual final number? 4.4 million buys.

Billionaire Of The Day: Norman Braman – From NFL Waterboy, To $2 Billion Auto Dealer Tycoon

The name "Norman Braman" probably won't be topping any lists of billionaires anytime soon in terms of familiarity or recognizability, but citizens of Philadelphia, PA and Miami, FL are likely to be familiar with him, particularly sports fans and art enthusiasts. Long-time football fans (especially followers of the Philadelphia Eagles) might remember Braman from his stint between the years 1985 and 1994 as owner of the team, along with his brother-in-law Ed Leibowitz.  That stint is made all the more impressive when you find out the incredible fact that as a teenager, Braman served as a waterboy for the very same football team he would later own part of, for eight years.
But nobody's ever actually made a fortune as a football team owner (you pretty much have to be rich already to get into that game), and so it was with Norman Braman, who, unlike a lot of billionaires, wasn't born into wealth and had to launch a career to become one. Instead, he was born to middle-class parents, and his father owned a barbershop – Norman didn't go into the family business, though, instead he worked in various departments at Seagram's Distributors. After that, and just two years after graduating from college, he founded a self-service grocery store chain in Philadelphia, called Keystone Stores. But the feather in Braman's corporate cap, and the one that earned him most of his $1.9 billion personal fortune, has been Braman Motorcars, his auto dealership empire that began in 1972 and now includes over 23 different locations spread out across Florida and Colorado. With estimated annual revenues somewhere over $1.6 billion, Braman Motorcars has been outrageously successful, and has allowed its owner and namesake Norman to follow more traditional billionaire pursuits.

Benevolent Chinese Billionaire Takes 6,400 Of His Employees On A Luxury French Vacation

Hypothetical scenario: You work for a company that is about to pass its 20th anniversary. How do you think the founder of your company would celebrate this occasion? If the company just had a few employees, maybe the boss would treat everyone to a fancy dinner somewhere. Maybe the boss would even give each employee a $100 gift certificate to Starbucks or something. If the company had hundreds of employees, I imagine that the founder wouldn't do much more than send out a celebratory email. MAYBE he or she would go so far as to give everyone in the company a random vacation day. And if the company had thousands of employees, I'm doubting anything would be done at all. The founder would probably throw a lavish party for a small group of executives, right? The founder certainly wouldn't take thousands of his employees on a luxury French vacation. Right? Well, apparently Chinese billionaire Li Jinyuan is not your typical boss…
Twenty years ago, Li Jinyuan founded a company called the Tiens Group in the Chinese port city of Tianjin. The company's first business operation was to export Chinese medicines, Calcium tablets and a generic brand of instant coffee. Tiens eventually went on to hire an army of multi-level direct salespeople to push its products to consumers. The company expanded into selling pharmaceuticals, healthcare products and a wide variety of nutritional supplements.
By 2009, Tiens Group was selling products to over 16 million customers in 190 countries. For some reason, the majority of their customers are in Russia. The Tiens Group is sort of like the Herbalife of Russia and China.
Today the company has 8000 employees and generates over $500 million worth of profits every year. In 2011, Forbes estimated that Li Jinyuan's personal net worth exceeded $1 billion for the first time. His net worth has since dipped to around $800 million.

The Richest Human Beings Of All Time – #22: Carlos Slim Helu

When you adjust for inflation, Carlos Slim Helu is the 22nd richest person who has ever lived. With a current net worth of $71.7 billion, Carlos Slim Helu is the second richest person in the world today. In fact, from 2010 to 2013, he actually was the richest person in the world, knocking out Bill Gates for the first time in a decade. So where did the man known as the "Warren Buffett of Mexico" come from, and how did he earn such a massive fortune? His wealth seems to have come from a combination of business savvy, intuition, luck, and the solid investment instruction he received from his successful father. Not only has he amassed an incredible fortune, but his network of businesses continues to show growth and increased value. It's pretty clear that Carlos Slim Helu's massive wealth is here to stay. Here's how a boy from Mexico laid the foundation for a major business empire.
Carlos Slim Helu was born in Mexico City, Mexico on January 28, 1940. His father moved from Lebanon to Mexico in the early 1900s, and his mother was from a Lebanese family already living in Mexico. His parents are credited with establishing one of the first magazines in Arabic published in Mexico. They also launched a dry good store, which went on to become quite profitable. From there, Helu's father, Julien Slim Haddad, began investing in real estate. Eleven years after launching their dry goods store, Haddad was a millionaire. In fact, Carlos Slim Helu attributes much of his business acumen to what he learned from his father. His father was considered a major trendsetter with regards to discount store operations, and he built a sizable business empire in Mexico. His continued success made him quite powerful in Mexico City, and he was instrumental in investing in local businesses whenever the economy dipped, thereby keeping the city alive.

Drink Like A Millionaire: 7 Of The World's Most Expensive Cocktails

It's Friday night and you're ready to r-e-l-a-x. You worked your ass off all week, paid your bills, forced yourself to go to the gym, and now it's cocktail time. Some of us might head to the closest happy hour spot with friends for some two-for-one margaritas. But maybe you're a baller and you want something a little more posh, like a $12,000 cognac concoction. Because yes – such a thing exists.
There are plenty of mixologists out there making $14 artisanal cocktails with blackberry shrub and deconstructed cherries. But the true billionaires of the world can throw down some serious cash if they're in the mood for one of the world's most expensive cocktails. So if you were flying around on your Bombardier jet on a Friday night, here's a sampling of the world's priciest cocktails for your (luxury) happy hour pleasure.
Winston
Back in 2013, award-winning mixologist Joel Heffernan at Melbourne's Club 23 set a Guinness World Record for the most expensive cocktail with the Winston, which is named after that refined old gent, Winston Churchill. A sampling of the ingredients includes Grand Marnier Quintessence and Chartreuse Vieillissement Exceptionnellement Prolonge, and the 1858 Croizet cognac, which goes for about $6,000 a shot. With names like that, you know the liquor is luxe. They only made a few Winstons, and they sold for over $12,000 each. Let's just hope whoever drank the things was able to enjoy them while they lasted.

Two Months After Selling For $38 Million This Bel Air Villa Is Re-Listed For $45 Million! Nice Flip!!

We can hardly believe it. The Bel Air mansion previously owned by Georgia Frontiere, which sold in an off-market transaction in March for $38 million is now listed for $45 million!
The March sale transaction was private, so little is known — yet — about who the current owners are. Or why they are making such a high-stakes turnaround for the property. Perhaps the local real estate market, known as the Platinum Triangle, is red hot. Real estate market data indicate that the last estate sold in the 90077 area code was Kenny Rogers' former estate, which went for $46.2 million. In any case, this classic Mediterranean villa is giving home hunters a lot more to talk about than just the asking price.
Authentic details abound on the 17,700-square-foot property, which was designed in 1931 by Paul Williams. The property sits behind iron gates and is abundant in custom chandeliers, courtyards, fountains and lush gardens with water features.

Did An Audience Member's Coughing Help Win $1.5 Million On "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire"?

Admit it. Secretly you want to win a ton of money on a game show. We all do. How many times have you found yourself sitting at home yelling answers at the television screen during your favorite game show? So, if you actually made it on to your favorite show, what would you do to win? How far would you be willing to go? Would you be willing to cheat? Deception is a strange thing, and depending on how large a deception it is, it can be easily brushed away, or make a massive mess. In the case of Major Charles Ingram, a contestant on the British version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?", deception was taken to a whole new level. All it took was a surprisingly simple plan, some solid acting skills, and a little help from his friends. Here's how Charles Ingram won 1 million GBP (approx. 1.5 million USD) on "Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?" via a simple cheat, and what happened when his deception was discovered.
Charles Ingram was born in Derbyshire, United Kingdom on August 6, 1963. He went on to attend Oswestry School. He joined the Army in 1986, and was promoted to captain four years later. He became a major in 1995, and worked as a NATO peacekeeper in Bosnia in 1999. Along the way, he also earned a BSc in Civil Engineering from Kingston Polytechnic and an MSc in Corporate Management from Cranfield University. In 1989, he married a woman named Diana, and they went on to have three daughters together. Charles and Diana. It was the stuff of fairy tales.

Luck, Hard Work, Ambition – These Are The Traits You Need To Become A Billionaire

Perhaps, like me, you spend time pondering how people like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey, Steve Jobs, and Mark Zuckerberg found it in them to have the drive, determination, and work ethic to dominate their industries and make billions of dollars. I mean it is tiring just getting up and working out and going to work and dealing with our families, friends, pets, and lives, am I right? So what makes billionaires different from you and me, other than the size of their bank accounts?
The truth is that billionaires actually are different. They have strengths and traits that most of us simply don't have. Whether they were born with these traits or developed them along the road to success and wealth is irrelevant. They have them and these traits have helped these billionaires succeed beyond their wildest dreams. The good news is, since most of these traits aren't inherent, you can work on developing them for yourself. Maybe they'll lead you to wealth, but we can guarantee they will lead you to a better life.
Oprah Winfrey: Grateful
Oprah Winfrey's story is well known. She grew up very poor and went on to dominate daytime television. Even now, she doesn't let her $3 billion net worth get to her head. She maintains a consistent attitude of gratitude for everything she has. In fact, she inspires her fans with words like:
"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough."

If You Were A Billionaire, Here's How You'd Vacation

Most of us fantasize about vacations about 355 days of the year as we're working, standing in line at the grocery store, or filling our cars up with gas. That fantasy might consist of a reasonably priced flight somewhere tropical, with good food, decent beaches, and no boss in sight. For thebillionaires of the world, vacations are a little different; think private jets, personal chefs, and fine champagne delivered to you by skydivers.
That's right, skydivers.
Vacation time is great, whether you're staying at a bed and breakfast in New Orleans or living it up in a palatial suite in Dubai. And if you are actually a billionaire (or are on your way to becoming one), here's a snapshot of some luxury vacations you might just want to hit up.
The $80,000 African Safari: An African safari is a dream vacation for a lot of people, and it's never dirt-cheap. But luxury travel brand Abercrombie & Kent have taken the safari to a whole new level. You can travel via private jet to different countries on the continent, sip fine champagne delivered to you by skydivers, experience epic five-star dinners, and watch massive wildebeest migrations – while sipping champagne, of course. The only catch is that the price is approximately $80,000 for the private jet option. If you're a billionaire, knock yourself out.
